Diet Meals Don’t Have to be Boring
From Judy's beloved dachshund, Simon:

As a dog that lives on a very dull diet, I understand how boring eating the same foods day after day can be. Try kibble. Sometimes when I cannot face another bowl of bland pellets, I will seek a tidbit of cheese or chicken mixed in to tease me into eating.

After observing the way my owner eats, I advise doing the same with human food. Adding small amounts of tasty food to potatoes, rice, pasta, or salads can make eating on a diet fun rather than an obligation. And you can do this without adding many calories. Here’s what you can do:
· Melt grated Swiss or Cheddar cheese on a baked potato or top it with sautéed onions, mushrooms and garlic
· Add a few sliced black olives, along with fresh oregano and basil, to tomato sauce to perk up your pasta
· Toss a handful of raisins or dried cranberries, pine nuts or pistachios into rice to give it a welcome crunchiness
· Slice a few pieces of avocado and roasted beets and add with a few dabs of warm goat cheese, a couple of candied pecans and strips of pear to turn a ho-hum salad into something more exotic and flavorful
· Sprinkle powdered soup mix on steamed spinach, carrots or squash while hot. The vegetables will taste as if they have been cooking in broth.
· Put a slice of very low-fat cheese on toast while it is hot as a substitute for butter.

These additions add only a few calories to your meal and make them so much more enjoyable. Now if I only could do away with my kibble . . .

Simon Says: Leftovers for Dummies?
From Judy's beloved dachshund Simon:

There should be a book called "Leftovers for Dummies." As someone who is occasionally treated to a yummy but alas usually too small morsel of leftovers, I know how wonderful they can be. Leftovers, or to put it more elegantly, surplus food from last night’s dinner, can turn a lunch at work from boring to "is it lunchtime yet?”

Leftovers in the frig make great snacks for your kids when they come home from school ravenous (or, perhaps more importantly, when you come home ravenous). And that cooked meat or pasta or vegetables is waiting to be turned into a quick second meal or put into broth for a hearty soup that can be eaten while the rest of dinner is cooking. If those leftovers are ever too tempting in the frig, throw them in single serving zip-top bags, put them in the freezer, and microwave as needed.

Of course, if there isn’t enough for dinner, I will be happy to dispose of them.

Simon Says: Spice up your Weight Loss
A tip from Simon (Judy's beloved Dauchsund):

Eating the same foods every day can become very tiresome. Just try eating dog food for the rest of your life and you'll know how I feel every day. You're lucky, because if pasta, potatoes, rice and cereal start to taste the same, add some toppings that tempt your taste buds. Chop some fresh basil into your pasta, cut sprigs of fresh dill weed into a bowl of potatoes mashed with some non-fat sour cream, mix fresh garden peas and briefly cooked corn kernel into rice and drizzle with olive oil. And if you pass by my food bowl, add a few tidbits of chicken please.

Simon says: Make walking fun
Judy's dog Simon tells us about they make walking together fun:

Walking for exercise can be fun or really boring. For me, a good walk is one in which I can use my long nose to sniff the world around me (which is only 18” off the ground), say hello (more sniffing) to other dogs and have a chance to leave my mark on the grass. I noticed listening to my owner talk to herself (she does this a lot) that a good walk for her is seeing five baby goslings which we did yesterday, or sniffing at the fruit blossoms on the trees we pass or noticing a new store that she tells herself she will check out later.

To make your walk more interesting, change the time of day in which you walk. You will be surprised at how different the streets are between morning and evening or mid day: it will be quieter or more active, different people will be on the streets and even the light will be different.

And if you see a long haired dachshund that looks like me, say hello.

Simon says: Wash your windows
Wash your windows now that spring is here. It is great exercise for your arms and waist. I would help except my legs are too short.
