Hi, and welcome.  I hope the program is going well for you so far.

We try to keep things simple so 1 and 1/2 cups of cooked pasta is just right for dinner :-)

Measuring portions can indeed be confusing: there are amounts, grams, ounces, etc. never mind the fact that youíre usually eating several macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fat) at once.  As much as possible, keep it simple, and just by putting attention on it and being mindful, you will be doing something positive for yourself on your weight loss journey.  Over time, you will get a feel for how much your body - and your brain! - needs to eat.

Just starting.  I would like to know how I am supposed to be portioning pasta for dinner.  Am I focusing on calories or cups?  For example I had barilla pasta and it said 2oz was 200 calories.  Very confusing!  I ended up eating 1 1/2 cups of that pasta making me think I have over ate!  Can someone please explain this to me!

Hello and welcome!  I applaud you for being so thoughtful about your body, your health, and what will work for you.

I do think you need to discuss with your doctor whether the program is in keeping with your post-procedure eating plan.  What you could do is start by incorporating the carb snack guidelines in the phase III part of our book (limit to approximately 125 calories and 25-30 grams of carbs) an hour before lunch, and then again and an hour or 2 before dinner and see how it affects your appetite at lunch and dinner.  If you find yourself craving something after dinner, wait for 2 or 3 hours after you've had dinner if it is a "protein" dinner and have a small snack.  See if the snacks curb your appetite. 

IF, and only IF, this would be OK with your doctor, another option is to follow the program following the men's protein portions but the women's carb portions so you get more protein.

I have had gastric bypass surgery and must eat at least 60 grams of protein each day.  My doctors always say to ďeat the protein firstĒ before carbs just to make sure I have room for that much food.  Will this diet work for me?

I had the surgery 4 years ago and had hit a maintenance weight.  Recently my doctor prescribed an antidepressant that is working incredibly well - except that I gained 5 lbs in one week! I would love to try this plan but donít want to become malnourished because of the lack of protein.
Hi Mel, and welcome!  I am very excited for you that you have found us.  Thank you for your positive words.  We wish everyone would find out about our program as soon as antidepressant and other related meds are prescribed - hopefully the word will continue to spread :-)

I applaud you for all you have done to lose weight with all of the factors related to your medications.  Clearly, you are someone who takes charge to take care of yourself. 

I suggest starting the program in Phase I.  If you find you're not hungry for any of the recommended snacks, or if you find the portion sizes are too big and you can't finish them without being uncomfortable, you can eliminate or reduce snacks or portion sizes, respectively, as you need.  If after one week you keep eliminating snacks or you keep eliminating portion sizes without going hungry, you could switch to Phase II (instead of staying in Phase I for the entire 2 weeks).  However, do take things slowly and there's no reason to rush into Phases II or III - the idea is for your body to get used to this way of eating and to give yourself time to establish the habits and rhythm of the diet.

I have spent the last 2 years on a great diet program that allowed me to lose 50 pounds. The first 30 pounds came off and stayed off for a year,  The second 20 pounds came off while I was on Prozac and now the weight is creeping back on...I can't stabilize my weight.
I was on Prozac for 15 years and that is when I gained those 50 pounds.  I came off the drug, started the weight loss program, lost 30 pounds, but after a year I had to go back on the Prozac again. The second 20 pounds has been a real challenge because of the Prozac.  I have been searching for years for help with this Prozac related weight gain and libido loss to no avail.  I am INCREDIBLY excited to have found your book and I finally have hope that I can manage my depression and my weight. My question is, I don't know where to start your Serotonin Power Diet?  I don't have major weight to lose (only the 6 pounds that are creeping back on from my 50-pound weight loss). I just want to continue my healthy eating, maintain the weight I am at now,  but increase my Seratonin production.  Do I start in the final phase?  Thank you for your years of research and discovery on this important issue!  I just wish I had found you soon (and wish my doctors had!!!). Hello, and welcome!  It's wonderful you're reading labels and being thoughtful about the diet - and that you're reaching out with questions.  All good: you're taking care of yourself and taking charge.

Eggplant parmesan is typically made with a lot of fat so in general, going forward, I would avoid eggplant parmesan - but sure, vegetable lasagna without the cheese should be fine.  Keep reading labels as you're doing!  And yes, eating rolls is a great way to get the carbs you needed. 

I'm really glad things have been going smoothly so far - that's wonderful.  Please keep us posted on anything related to your experiences on the diet, and we're definitely here to answer more questions, etc.

In the book, it states that if I want to have pizza then I should have a vegetable pizza and remove the cheese. And also to make sure itís under 350 calories for the carbohydrate requirement.  My family rarely orders-in pizza or eats frozen pizza however, on occasion we heat up frozen eggplant parmesan or frozen vegetable lasagna. Iím in the Serotonin Surge Phase.  If I removed the cheese and kept my serving to 350 calories, does that fit the diet? Iím only harping about it now because I had eggplant parmesan (and removed most of the cheese) this evening. I read the nutritional label and saw that it only had 21 grams of carbohydrate for the portion I ate so I then ate  a dinner roll in hopes of compensating for it. I started Week 2 today and everything has been running smoothly until I had dinner tonight.

Hello and welcome!  Thanks for writing in.  It's wonderful you've got an exercise program in place, and I also applaud you for trying something new to lose what you've gained since taking Lexapro. 

Generally, we find our clients and readers lose weight at a rate of about 1-2 pounds per week.  It's variable, though, and I strongly encourage you to stand back and look at the overall weight loss trend over time.  If you look at several months and you've lost 12 pounds, that's fantastic.  Some weeks you may lose 2 or 3, or more.  Just don't get discouraged if some weeks you don't lose, and there may even be some weeks when you gain a pound or 2 for a variety of reasons - stick with it during the challenging times!

You can ask us questions about how to tweak the diet to make it work for you, or ask questions about how you're following the diet.  Definitely try to notice how eating certain foods makes you feel - you know your body best.

The more weight someone has to lose, the faster the weight loss.  You may lose at a rate of one pound a week overall which is excellent.  The keys are:

- controlling your appetite so weight loss is comfortable and you don't feel deprived
- incorporating foods you like again, so you don't feel deprived
- planning ahead for meals and snacks
- mixing up your exercise routine and incorporating aerobic exercise (being in the Northeast, I get it that at times sidewalks are icy and the air is frigid!  Dress accordingly and walk safely - better yet, walk or jog indoors)
- be kind to yourself and stay connected to people who make you feel good about yourself
- try to get back on track going forward if you veer off track rather than beating yourself up or completely getting sidelined and throwing in the towel - you don't have to be "perfect"
